Course Technologies Roundtable: Teaching, Learning, and Technology in Action

CourseTechnologyRoundtable2010posterLast May 18, the Learning Technology Institute (LTI) hosted its annual Course Technologies Roundtable where five instructors from different departments and faculties shared how they integrated technology in their own courses. Unfortunately, we were unable to record the session due to technical difficulties. Below however are some short highlights of what the speakers talked about and a few resources they shared:

  • Cynthia Nicolson from the Faculty of Education discussed how she leveraged the tools and capabilities of WebCT Vista to bring in a variety of external resources such as YouTube videos into her course.
  • Keiko Kozumi from the Department of Asian studies showed us the Monkey Game she created with Arts ISIT. It is designed to help students improve their Japanese vocabulary in a different way.
  • monkey game-01Craig Phillips from the School of Nursing shared with us his experience in using online surveys, and WebCT Vista in his Statistics Literacy in Nursing course. For fully online courses, he emphasized the need to have the human element through regular and honest communications with your students. You can review or download his presentation below.
  • Ray Hsu from the Creative Writing Program talked about his experience with using the open-source course management system called Sakai. He also talked about a contest that John Marvin, one of his TAs organized as part of the course’s video game writing section. Students submitted video game script, John coded the winning script, and it was project in the lecture hall during the last days of class.   • Peter M. Ostafichuk from the Department of Mechanical Engineering presented the variety of tools he used in his 2nd year mechanical engineering course. He used multiple choice testing cards to provide immediate feedback to students during a class. In order to help students understand how to solve class problems, he creates videos posted on his WebCT Vista course where he narrates the solution, step-by-step, using a combination of Camtasia, a tablet PC, and a microphone. Lastly, he discussed how he uses Google Docs to foster in-class live contributions from students. You can download Peter’s presentation here.
